DMiP Week 8
In the 8th session for Digital Media in Practice we looked at basic desk top publishing principles. The four golden rules according to Robin Williams‘ The Non-Designers Design Book are as follows…
1.) Contrast – Avoid elements that are similar (Type face, colour, size, etc). Make them very different to improve the visual attraction.
2.) Repetition – Repeat visual elements throughout the piece to strengthen the unity.
3.) Alignment – Place nothing on the page arbitrarily. All the elements should have a visual connection to one another.
4.) Proximity – Items relating to one another should be grouped close together. This organises the information and reduces clutter.
You may notice that an interesting acronym is revealed here. Yes that’s right, the one thing to remember when designing a layout is….wait a minute….oh crap I’ve forgotten already! Oh yeah! That was it – C.R.A.P.
We also discussed typefaces, the difference between serif and sans-serif fonts and the importance of selecting an appropriate typeface.
We were asked to design a DVD cover for our recreation scene film. Using Adobe’s InDesign CS3 software, we were supplied with a template. Following the design principles outlined above, I created a back cover for a DVD which included a few stills from the film, a brief synopsis and some erroneous 5 star reviews akin to those you may find on a DVD cover.
By making the font colour white, it stands out against the background. For the smaller typeface I used Verdana which is a sans-serif font and easily legible. I used a radically different font for the title to continue the principle of contrast. I also gave the images and the title font a lime green stroke, to contrast against the dark grey background, this also uses the principle of repetition.
The synopsis text is left aligned opposed to the images that are right aligned. This observes the principle of alignment.
By grouping the images together and aligning the review text underneath the synopsis text, the principle of proximity is also observed.
